ShortsFromVideo questions and answers
Can't find it? Ask the assistant (bottom right) or write to [email protected].
Is ShortsFromVideo really free?
Yes, while we launch. Every feature, no watermark, 600 source minutes a month (fair use). Only optional paid outside engines, such as a studio voice for voice-over, cost money — exactly what they cost us, from a prepaid credit.
What counts as a minute?
Only the length of the source video you upload or import. Re-edits, re-renders, extra platform versions and re-posts never use minutes.
Which videos work best?
Talking videos: podcasts, interviews, lectures, webinars, live streams. Clips are cut on sentence boundaries, so there must be speech.
How long can a video be?
Up to 5 hours per video on the free launch plan.
Can I import from YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox or Zoom?
Yes. Paste a YouTube, Drive or Dropbox link (shared as “anyone with the link”), a Zoom cloud recording after connecting Zoom, or any direct .mp4 link.
How are clips picked?
Every sentence-aligned window is scored for hook, payoff, energy, pace, topic keywords, emotion, completeness and length. Our AI then reviews the best ones like an editor. Each clip shows a 0–100 score and the reason.
Will a clip cut off before the punchline?
No. Clips start and end on sentence boundaries, and the score rewards a clear payoff at the end.
Does it follow the person who is talking?
Yes. The frame cuts to whoever is speaking, with a 1-second guard so it does not jump on a cough. You can also use split screen or fit the whole frame.
What caption styles are there?
Karaoke, pop, bounce, boxed and minimal, with automatic emoji and keyword highlights. Each platform version gets its own safe zone and size.
Which captions languages are supported?
Captions are in the language spoken; English is the default today.
Can I edit a clip?
Yes, by text: click words to set the start and end, strike words to cut them, and remove filler words and long pauses in one click. Re-rendering is free.
Can it post for me?
Yes. Schedule to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok, LinkedIn and X, several accounts at once. Until each platform approves our app, posts run as a dry run and nothing is sent.
What is the best time to post?
Leave the time empty and each platform gets its best hour: learned from your own clip stats once you have them, otherwise a sensible default for Indian audiences.
Does it add B-roll?
Yes, optionally: stock footage when a Pexels key is set, otherwise short animated text cards in your brand colours.
Can I use my brand?
Yes. Brand kits set the font, colours, caption style, position and logo for every clip.
Can my team use it?
Yes. Invite teammates as owner, admin, editor or viewer; up to 10 seats on the launch plan.
Is there an API?
Yes: create projects, fetch ranked clips, render more versions, schedule posts and receive signed webhooks. See the API reference.
What can I export?
MP4 in 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, SRT and VTT subtitles, and Premiere / DaVinci XML.
Which AI do you use?
Surge's own AI server first; Claude only as a fallback when it fails. Speech-to-text runs on our servers.
